  7. The archive file WDETCT10.ZIP as supplied by Drazof Industries, contains
  8. the following files:

  10.    WDETECT.EXE      winDetective game executable
  11.    WDT_STD.DLL      a library required for the standard game
  12.    STARSHIP.WDT     the default cardset
  13.    WDETECT.HLP      on-line help files
  14.    FILE_ID.DIZ      identification for BBSs
  15.    CARDSET.ZIP      an archive of files to use if you want
  16.                       to create a custom cardset
  17.    WDETECT.TXT      this file

  20. Installation
  21. ============
  22.  
  23. The game should be installed in its own directory, by unzipping the 
  24. archive file, and then, in Windows, adding a new item to your games group.  
  25. To uninstall, delete the entire contents of the WinDetective directory.  
  26. No files will be placed in your Windows directory.  A windows configuration 
  27. file wdetect.ini and a scores file wdt_name.dat will be created in the game 
  28. directory when you first play.  Both can be deleted at any time, although
  29. doing so removes your game setup choices and scores record.
  30.  
  31. WinDetective requires Windows 3.1, colour VGA monitor, and a mouse.  Its
  32. performance improves with faster machines and accelerated video but can be
  33. played without them.  The uncompressed files will require about 600K of 
  34. hard disk space.
  35.  
  36. For novice users:
  37.  
  38. 1.   Create a directory.  Go to the location on your hard drive where you
  39.      want to install the game, and type:
  40.                   MD WDETECT
  41.      Then type:   CD WDETECT
  42.  
  43. 2.   Copy the file WDETCT10.ZIP to this directory.  If the file is on a
  44.      floppy disk drive, and your new directory is on your C drive, type
  45.                   COPY A:WDETCT10.ZIP C:
  46.      Then type:   PKUNZIP WDETCT10
  47.  
  48.      (Note: You must have PKUNZIP.EXE in your path.  If you do not have
  49.      a copy of PKUNZIP.EXE, you should obtain PKZ204G.EXE from your BBS.)

  51. 3.   Start Windows.  If you have a Games group icon, double click to
  52.      enlarge it.  Otherwise double click to enlarge a different group.
  53.  
  54. 4.   Click on the File choice at the far left of the main menu.  Then
  55.      click on the New item in that menu.  A box appears with two choices;
  56.      select the one called "Program Item" by clicking on it.  Then click
  57.      on the "Ok" button.
  58.  
  59. 5.   The "Program Item Properties" box appears.  Click on the button
  60.      marked "Browse".  You will see a standardized Windows file selection
  61.      box (for details about this, see your Windows manual).  You will
  62.      have to navigate around your directories until you find the one into
  63.      which you copied the WinDetective files.

  65. 6.      In the list at the left, you will see the file WDETECT.EXE.  Double 
  66.      click on this.  The file navigator box will disappear, and the line 
  67.      marked "Command Line" will contain the file path for WDETECT.EXE.  
  68.      Click OK and you're done.

  70. 7.   You can now play the game by double clicking its icon in your games
  71.      (or other) group.

  91. Known Problems
  92. ==============

  94. Computer players can sometimes get stuck in the vertical "lanes" between 
  95. locations, especially in long games played in novice mode.  One way to try
  96. to "unstick" them is to suspect them into one of the rooms.
  97.  
  98. At present there is no way to leave the central room (the Command Deck in 
  99. the StarShip cardset) by the upper door.  Exit from this location is always
  100. by the lower door.
  101.  
  102. On some video boards, in some high resolution SVGA modes, buttons and fields 
  103. may not be correctly positioned with respect to the bitmaps.  The screens 
  104. should be arranged properly in regular VGA 640x480 modes on most boards.

  111. "as is", with no express or implied warranties as to performance or fitness 
  112. for any purpose.  Drazof Industries and the authors of this game assume no
  113. liability for losses or damages, direct, consequential or incidental, that 
  114. may result from the use of the program.  The user must assume the entire risk 
  115. of using this program.

  121. If you continue to use the game after a try-out period of 30 days, you
  122. are urged to register your copy for U.S. $15 or Canadian $20, payable by 
  123. check or preferably money order, to S.F. Claughton, at

  130. Registered users will receive a disk with the latest version of the game 
  131. plus an additional library file that allows play of the enhanced "motives" 
  132. game.  Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

  138. This program is shareware.  What this means is that you are free to try it
  139. out for a period of 30 days, after which, if you continue to use it, you must
  140. register your copy with Drazof Industries.
  141.  
  142. The registration fee of $15.00 U.S. or $20.00 Canadian allows the user to 
  143. use the program on one computer at a time.  Multiple installations of one 
  144. registered copy are allowed only if there is no possibility of the program 
  145. being used on more than one of the machines at a time.  In other words, 
  146. treat the software like a book.
  147.  
  148. Registered copies of WinDetective contain an additional file enabling some
  149. advanced game features.  Inclusion of this additional file, wdt_mot.dll, 
  150. turns the shareware archive copy into a registered archive copy.  You are
  151. not allowed to make and distribute copies of the registered archive, with
  152. the exception of a backup copy for yourself.

  154. Please feel free to give away shareware copies of WinDetective to friends or
  155. upload it to bulletin boards.  If you give away copies of WinDetective, the
  156. disk or archive must contain all of the files listed in the File List, above, 
  157. and no additional files.  For BBSs, Drazof Industries allows the addition of 
  158. a small advertisement or notice of origin file for the BBS.

  160. If you re-archive these files before uploading, the archive file must be 
  161. named WDETCT10.ZIP.  If you use an alternative compression utility, the 
  162. archive must be named WDETCT10.ARJ, or WDETCT10.LZH, etc.  The numbering 
  163. scheme reflects Drazof Industries' major/minor versions, and must not be 
  164. altered.

  166. SYSOPS:  Please remove any archived copies of WinDetective from your boards
  167. bearing any other name than WDETCT10.xxx, where xxx is the archive extension,
  168. and ensure that the archive contents match the File List, above.

  171. Disk Vendors
  172. ============
  173.  
  174. Disk Vendors may include the WinDetective game in their catalog subject to
  175. the following:
  176.  
  177. 1.  Customers are clearly informed of the concept of shareware and the
  178.     fact that purchase of the disk does not constitute registration of
  179.     the program.  The program must not be represented as public domain
  180.     or free.
  181.  
  182. 2.  The archive file is provided complete in accordance with the File List,
  183.     above, and the archive contents are not altered in any way, although 
  184.     recompressing with a different archiving utility is allowed, provided 
  185.     that the archive name remains WDETCT10.  Drazof Industries allows the
  186.     inclusion of a small (no more than one screen) advertisement or 
  187.     notice-of-origin file for the disk vendor.

  189. 3.  No more than a reasonable fee, usually in the neighbourhood of $5 per
  190.     disk, is charged for the distribution of the WinDetective shareware
  191.     archive file.
  192.  
  193. 4.  Disk Vendors must notify Drazof Industries of their inclusion of the
  194.     WinDetective program in their catalog, and provide a copy of the catalog
  195.     listing WinDetective.  Provision of a catalog is considered notification.
